To avoid tax related identity theft
Most identity thieves file “phony” returns early so that the IRS receives the phony forms before the “real” taxpayers have time to file.
After a tax return is electronically filed, any other individual electronically filed return for the same tax year and same social security number is rejected. So filing early and putting your return in the “queue” prevents tax scammers from using your tax file for their “dirty work”. (Does not prevent filing an amended return. Amended returns are processed differently).

Returns filed early in the season may avoid Government Shutdown and statutory return processing delays (e.g. Path Act, Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Credit).
So if you want to keep your tax record secure and get a speedy refund, file early . . . .
